HERDIN on Tour: Bacolod City

BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology VI and the Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium conducted a series of HERDIN Training last January 29-31, 2018 in three higher learning institutions in Bacolod City. These were – University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos, Colegio San Agustin, and the University of St. La Salle. The training participants were taught on how to use the database, including how to register, search, and upload researches. Each trainee was also tasked to upload at least one (1) abstract of any health research from the institution.

The training kicked off at University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos participated by 15 faculty and staff members from the Research Office, Library, and College of Allied Health and Sciences. The second day training was conducted at Colegio San Agustin with 50 participants, including faculty, staff, and students. The third training was held at University of St. La Salle with 20 participants.

The trainers were Ms. Jeverly Prinsipe and Ms. Judy Ann Bacud from PCHRD.

WVHRDC holds Training on Communicating Health Research Results to Stakeholders

ILOILO CITY— Eleven researchers from member institutions of WVHRDC participated in the three-day Training on Communicating Health Research Results to Stakeholders held December 6-8, 2017 at DOST VI Training Room. The training aimed to capacitate the researchers in communicating the findings of their research to the stakeholders.

Day 1 of the training focused on communication planning and presentation skills, which covered topics such as audience, content, structure, style, visuals, and questions. Dr. Alice Joan G. Ferrer from the University of the Philippines Visayas, gave the lecture and facilitated the workshop.

Day 2 of the training began with a recapitulation of the previous day’s activities. This was followed by a lecture on Talking Science with the Media followed by a writeshop on media releases. In the afternoon, three (3) local media practitioners gave lectures on what they do, and what and how they select topics to feature --- Mr. Jonathan Gellangarin of GMA Network for TV broadcast, Mr. Ian Gajete of Bombo Radyo Iloilo for radio broadcast, and Mr. Daryl Lasafin of Panay News for print media. Each of the 11 trainees had a one-on-one simulated interview with each media practitioner. The feedback provided by the media practitioners was found useful by the trainees in improving their skills in sharing their research findings to different media audiences.

On the third and last day of the training, Mr. Nestor P. Burgos Jr. of Inquirer Visayas gave a lecture on News Writing and Print Journalist. Thereafter, each trainee wrote and delivered a three-minute speech based on research results using the techniques learned from the training. A Certificate of Training Completion was given to each trainee.

The training director and main resource person was Dr. Alice Joan G. Ferrer, executive director and chairperson of the Human Resource Development Committee (HRDC) of WVHRDC. The preceptors of the training were members of the HRDC including Prof. Ma Socorro Leong-on of University of San Agustin for Day 1; Prof. Leah Araneta of University of the Philippines Visayas and Mr. Louie Hijalda of University of San Agustin for Day 2; and Dr. Ma. Delsa Gange of University of San Agustin for Day 3.

HERDIN ON TOUR: REGION VI

The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) together with Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC) conducted its first training on Health Research and Development Information Network (HERDIN) last October17, 2017 at CTE Building, West Visayas State University. The training was attended by 15 participants representing 12 institutions including librarians, IT personnel, doctors and research staff.

Ms. Violeta Intia, a Senior Science Research Specialist from PCHRD started the activity by discussing the overview of the workshop as well as setting the goals and objectives. During the lecture of Ms. Intia, she defined HERDIN as an online platform for bibliographic entries of completed researches in the Philippines. One of its objectives is to equip health research institutions the knowledge to make good use of the available resources. Following the lecture was the workshop proper conducted by Ms. Intia, Ms. Jeverly Principe, and Ms. Judy Ann Bacud of PCHRD. The workshop included lectures on ways to encode and upload to the database, searching researches, and document delivery. At the end of the session, each participant was tasked to come up with an output that will serve as an entry of their respective institution in the database.

The primary aim of the training is to encourage health research institutions to participate in strengthening the dissemination of information resources as part of managing knowledge for better health.

Health Research Utilization Forum

The Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC) organized a Health Research Utilization Forum last October 27, 2017 at Hotel Del Rio, Iloilo City. In the activity, four completed researches funded by the WVHRDC were presented by four researchers from different institutions. The forum was attended by a total number of 81 participants.

The first study presented was entitled “Modelling Dengue Cases in Iloilo Using Hierarchial Generalized Linear Models” by Mr. Elfred John C. Abacan from the University of the Philippines Visayas. Following the presentation was the giving of feedback from the invited reactors from different institutions. For the study of Mr. Abacan, Dr. Roel A. Alli of West Visayas State University (WVSU)- College of Agriculture and Forestry and Mr. Roderick M. Napulan from the Health Facility Development Management Bureau were the chosen reactors.

Next to Mr. Abacan was the presentation of Dr. Sheilla M. Trajera from University of St. La Salle of the research entitled “Health Seeking Behavior and Socio Economic Profile of the Select Indigenous Peoples (IPs) Communities in Negros Occidental: Basis for Policy Review”. The reactors for Dr. Trajera’s study were Ms. Kezzie Lyn B Hilado, a project associate of Health Policy and Development Program (Visayas), UP Visayas Foundation and Ms. Milina Jeruta from National Commission on Indigenous People.

Ms. Janice L. Amarante of Iloilo Doctors’ College was the third researcher who presented the study entitled “Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of Snake Plant (Sanseviera trifasciata) Leaf Extract”. The chosen reactors for this study were Dr. Jeannemar Genevive Yap-Figueras from WVSU-College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and Dr. Resurreccion B. Sadaba from UPV-CAS.

The last presentation was by Ms. Analyn Sa-an of St. Paul University Iloilo who presented the study entitled “Antiangiogenic Properties of Sargassum polycystum” Extracts in Duck Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM)”. Dr. Jane S. Geduspan of UPV was the invited reactor for the said study.

Representatives from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development also attended the forum. The activity intended to boost the confidence of each researcher and motivate them to conduct more research in the future.

WVHRDC holds training on Data Management and Report Writing

The Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC) conducted a training on Data Management and Report Writing on June 19-22, 2017 at the DOST VI- Training Room. Attending the training were 11 trainees that included the Consortium’s health research training scholars, health researchers, and health research instructors from member institutions of the Consortium. The training consisted of lectures and workshops.

The resource persons for the training included Professor Carolyn Yoro from the Central Philippine University who lectured on the topic Data Management and Appreciation. Professor Leah Araneta from the University of the Philippines Visayas gave a lecture on various topics, including description of data, basic concepts of Statistics, data presentations, and types of parametric and non-parametric statistical tools. Prof. Araneta also gave a workshop on preparing a coding manual and coding file, and supervised a hands-on practice on how to navigate a statistical software, encode data, process data, and generate results. A day was also spent by the trainees to process, analyse, interpret, and write a portion of their on-going researches. The output of the trainees were presented on the last day for comments by Dr. Alice Joan Ferrer from the University of the Philippines Visayas and currently the executive director of the Consortium. Dr. Ferrer gave a lecture on Data Analysis, Presentation, and Interpretation and how to write the different parts of a research report.

The training aimed to help researchers in the data processing, interpretation, and write up stages of their work. The training is one of the three trainings for 2017 that the Human Resource Committee of the Consortium is conducting. Providing support to the training as preceptors were Prof. Ma. Socorro Leong-on, Prof. Louie P. Hijalda and Dr. Ma. Delsa Gange from University of San Agustin, Prof. Melba Sale from Central Philippine University and Mr. Benedict Mark Carmelita from University of the Philippines Visayas.
