The Training Awards on Health Research for Region VI Scholars offered by the Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium is indeed an all-in-one package for the training scholars. After a series of free mentoring and trainings on Basic Research, Statistical Analysis and Technical Writing, five out of eleven scholars were granted with research funding from the Department of Science and Technology Region VI and Center for Health Development-Western Visayas.

  2. “Development of Reagent Strip for Semi-quantitative Urine Albumin, Protein and Creatinine Determination (Phase 1)” by Zesil Gay E. Gelle (University of San Agustin) Funding:Php200,000.00
  • DOH CHD-WV funded research projects:
  1. “Preliminary Findings on the Effect of 4Ps on Selected Child Health Indicators in Western Visayas” by Dr. Renilyn P. Reyes (Center for Health Development-Western Visayas) Funding:Php200,000.00
  2. “Effectiveness of Ascorbic Acid as an Adjunct to Allopurinol In the Treatment of Hyperuricemia Among Hypertensive Patients” by Karen Marie V. Cuñada, MD (West Visayas State University-Medical Center) Funding:Php100,000.00
  3. “The Effectiveness of Dark Chocolate (Theobroma cacao) in Dyslipidemia, Endothelial Disfunction and Blood Pressure: A Double-blind Placebo-controlled Randomized Clinical Trial” by Renato C. Ong, Jr., MD (West Visayas State University-Medical Center) Funding:Php200,000.00

In response to the Data Gathering on Research Ethics Committee in Western Visayas initiated by the Ethics Review Committee of the Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC), the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) indicated that a research ethics committee is set to be established in their hospital. Thus, there will be a Health Research Ethics Seminar and Organization of Ethics Review Board on February 27-28, 2012 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The Human Resource Development Sub-Committee and Ethics Review Sub-Committee of the Regional Health Research and Development Committee Region VI (RHRDC VI) in cooperation with the University of St. La Salle – Bacolod conducted the Training on Good Clinical Practice on September 30 – October 1, 2010 at the University of St. La Salle – Bacolod City to help medical and other health related professionals in Negros Occidental on how to conduct medical researches in accordance with the ethical principles.

Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is the international ethical and scientific quality standard for designing, conducting, recording and reporting trials that involve the participation of Human subjects.  It is a public assurance that rights, safety, and well-being of the trial subjects are protected.

Medical researches must comply with the ethical standards that promote respect for all human subjects and protect their health and rights.  Therefore, Good Clinical Practice must be taught to physicians and those who are involve in this activity.

There were thirty eight (38) participants coming from the different institutions in Negros Occidental attended the training.  The participants also presented their outputs for the training. The participant was grouped into four (4), each group presented their Information Sheet and Informed Consent Form.
